Nearly ¾ of North America population is overweight or obese and being overweight is a major risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.
Most food items marketed as snacks are full of fat, salt,refined oils and sugar, and harmful additives and flavourings. If you include snacks as part of your daily meal plan, choose those that will help balance blood sugar and keep you satisfied without a crash. Nuts, seeds, nut and seed butters, fruit, veggies, and hummus are all healthy options.
Stress causes the release of the hormone cortisol, which has been shown to contribute to excess weight gain and belly fat. Find ways to reduce both chronic and acute stress through lifestyle changes and activities such as mindfulness, meditation, social interaction, yoga, or journaling.
Studies have shown that even a single exercise session can improve insulin sensitivity in obese, type 2 diabetic individuals. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise five times a week, either aerobic exercise or strength training.
