The body's reaction to sleep loss can resemble insulin resistance and lead to the development of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.
Studies have shown a lack of sleep to be detrimental to both weight management and insulin sensitivity.
Creating healthy bedtime boundaries will cut down on habits and behaviours that may be impacting your sleep. Consider not using electronics or smartphones at least an hour before bedtime. Instead, do something special before bed — light a candle, meditate, read, or write in your journal — and see how it affects your sleep.
Studies have shown that modern, artificial light impacts sleep quality. And conversely, spending time outdoors can improve your sleep. Try spending more time outdoors this week, getting up and out in the morning to activate your circadian rhythm.
